How to Use Loan Calculator
Follow these steps, then review the result and the limitations below:
- Enter your total loan principal amount in dollars in the "Loan amount ($)" field.
- Enter the annual interest rate percentage in the "Annual interest rate (%)" field.
- Enter the total repayment period in years in the "Term (years)" field.
- Click "Calculate" for estimated monthly principal and interest, total payments, and interest. Use a term that corresponds to a whole number of months.
Practical Worked Example
A $250,000 mortgage loan at 6.5% annual interest over a 30-year term calculates a monthly payment of $1,580.17, total payments of $568,861.22, and total cumulative interest of $318,861.22.
Key Features & Capabilities
- Accurate standard compound amortization formula calculations.
- Provides instant monthly payment breakdowns, total lifetime repayment costs, and interest totals.
- Supports mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, and student debt calculations.
- The calculation code runs in your browser without sending the amounts to a tool API.
Understand the repayment model
The estimate assumes a fixed annual rate, equal monthly payments, and no additional fees. At 0%, a 1,200 principal over one year produces twelve payments of 100. An introductory promotional rate that later changes is not modeled.
For a positive rate, the payment covers interest and principal using an amortization formula. Totals are calculated from the unrounded payment and displayed to two decimals. A lender rounding each installment can produce a slightly different final payment.
Compare offers on the same basis
Use the same principal and term when comparing rates. Taxes, insurance, origination fees, penalties, and variable-rate changes are excluded. A nominal interest rate and a quoted APR may represent different costs.
Negative rates and partial-month terms are rejected. To enter six months, use 0.5 years. This calculator does not produce a repayment schedule or evaluate whether a loan is affordable.
How It Works (Technical Overview)
For a positive fixed rate, monthly payment M = P × r / (1 − (1 + r) raised to −n), where P is principal, r is annual percentage rate divided by 1200, and n is years multiplied by 12. At zero interest, M = P / n. Total payments are M × n; total interest is that total minus P. Totals use the unrounded monthly payment.
Real-World Use Cases & Applications
- Mortgage shopping: Homebuyers comparing 15-year vs. 30-year mortgage terms and calculating monthly budget impact.
- Auto financing: Car buyers evaluating auto loan interest rates and negotiating terms with lenders.
- Debt consolidation: Borrowers evaluating interest savings when refinancing high-interest credit card debt into lower-rate personal loans.
Privacy, Security & Accuracy
This calculator estimates standard fixed-rate amortized loans. It does not account for variable-rate adjustments, early payoff fees, or loan origination closing points.
Pro Tips for Best Results
Even modest extra principal payments made each month can shave years off your loan term and save thousands of dollars in compound interest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this loan calculator include property taxes or insurance?
This calculator computes principal and interest (P&I) payments. For mortgages, additional escrow items such as homeowners insurance and property taxes are added separately by lenders.
How does a shorter loan term affect my monthly payments and interest?
A shorter loan term (such as 15 years instead of 30) increases your monthly payment amount but drastically slashes the total lifetime interest you pay to the lender.
Can I use this calculator for auto loans and personal loans?
Yes! The standard amortization formula applies equally to car loans, personal loans, home mortgages, and student loans with fixed interest rates.
What if my loan has a 0% interest promotional rate?
If the interest rate is 0%, the calculator simply divides the total principal evenly across the number of months with zero interest added.
