Image Compressor

Export browser-readable images as JPEG with adjustable quality and optional dimensions. Output size may vary.

How to Use Image Compressor

Follow these steps, then review the result and the limitations below:

  1. Click "Select Image File" and upload your JPG, PNG, or WebP photo from your device.
  2. Enter a JPEG quality value from 0.1 to 1.0 in the numeric field (default: 0.80).
  3. Optionally specify target width or height dimensions to resize while compressing.
  4. Click "Process Image" to generate the compressed image and download it instantly to your downloads folder.

Practical Worked Example

Choose a JPEG and leave both dimension fields blank. Clicking "Process Image" downloads a JPEG named "compressed.jpg". The displayed file size and savings depend on the original image and quality value.

Key Features & Capabilities

  • Uses the browser canvas to export JPEG without a tool upload request.
  • Numeric JPEG quality control and a file size comparison after processing.
  • Accepts browser-readable images and exports JPEG.
  • Instant direct download without watermarks, daily compression limits, or registrations.

Choose size before quality

A photograph displayed in a small article card rarely needs the original camera dimensions. Set one dimension to preserve proportions automatically. If you set both dimensions, the image is stretched to that exact rectangle.

JPEG has no transparent pixels. This compressor places a white background behind transparent source pixels. Use PNG to WebP when you need transparency, and keep a source copy for future edits.

Check the exported result

Inspect text, faces, gradients, and high-contrast edges at the intended display size. A smaller file is useful only if the visible quality remains suitable. The displayed saving is calculated from the actual input and output byte counts.

Canvas export does not intentionally preserve camera metadata or embedded color profiles. This is an image delivery workflow rather than a photographic archive workflow.

How It Works (Technical Overview)

The browser draws the selected image to a canvas and exports it as a JPEG at the chosen quality value. Optional width and height fields set output dimensions. The browser downloads the resulting blob without sending the image to our server.

Real-World Use Cases & Applications

  • Website images: Compare JPEG file sizes and visible quality before publishing. A smaller image alone does not guarantee a performance score.
  • Email attachments: Shrinking oversized high-resolution photos to easily fit within 10 MB or 25 MB email attachment limits.
  • Online portal submissions: Compressing scanned passport photos, ID cards, and documentation for government or job application portals.

Privacy, Security & Accuracy

The output is always JPEG and can be larger than the input. JPEG removes transparency, and low quality settings may introduce visible artifacts.

Pro Tips for Best Results

Try different JPEG quality values and compare the downloaded size and appearance. This tool does not export WebP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will compressing my image reduce its visible quality?

JPEG is lossy. Lower quality can create visible artifacts, and the exported file can be larger than the original. Inspect the downloaded image.

Are my private photos uploaded to your server?

The compressor code reads the selected image locally and exports it through canvas. Avoid sensitive images on pages loading third-party scripts.

Can I preserve transparency in a PNG?

No. This compressor exports JPEG, which does not support transparency. Use a PNG or WebP workflow if transparency must be preserved.

Is there a file size limit for uploading?

The tool runs in your browser, so practical limits depend on your device memory and browser support. RAW camera files may not open.

  • PNG to WebP — Convert a PNG image to WebP, preserving transparency with adjustable quality and optional resizing.
  • Image Resizer — Resize a static image by dimensions or percentage and export PNG. One dimension preserves the aspect ratio.
  • Crop Image — Crop a static image using left, top, width and height in pixels, then download the selected region as PNG.
